Abhyanga - Oil Massage

Abhyanga is a traditional oil massage technique that aids in detoxifying the body by drawing toxins out through the skin, the body's largest organ.

Recommended Oils

Here are some oils to consider for Abhyanga, starting with sesame oil. If sesame oil feels too intense, try one of the other options:

  • Sesame Oil: This oil has a heating quality. It should be cured before use—heat it until a drop of water evaporates upon contact, then allow it to cool to a comfortable temperature. Sesame oil is the only one that requires curing.

  • Olive Oil: Offers a balanced, neutral quality.

  • Coconut Oil: Known for its cooling properties.

Optional: You may add essential oils for fragrance before applying the base oil.

Steps for Abhyanga

  1. Prepare your space: Choose a location where you won't slip or make a mess. Optionally, lay down a towel to prevent slipping.

  2. Disrobe: Remove your clothing to avoid staining.

  3. Start with the scalp: Gently massage the oil into your scalp.

  4. Move downward: Continue massaging down your body, ending at the soles of your feet. Pay special attention to dry or problematic areas that may need extra care.

  5. Let the oil permeate: Allow the oil to sit on your skin for 20 minutes, allotting the time to draw out toxins and nourish your body.

  6. Rinse off: After the massage, rinse off the oil in a warm shower.

  7. Pat dry: Gently pat your skin dry with a towel. Avoid wiping to retain some of the oil's moisture on your skin.
